RICHARD NIXON
(1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Fine content T.L.S. as President, 1p. 4to. on White House letterhead, Washington, Apr. 23, 1970 to Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor regretfully accepting his "resignation as Chairman and member of the President' Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, effective April 30, 1970." Nixon thanks Taylor who, prior to his work in the Nixon White House, served as Superintendant of West Point (1945-59), Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1962-64) and U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam (1964-65). Nixon adds: "I am deeply grateful for the outstanding contributions you have made in revitalizing the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Under your leadership the Board has provided me with invaluable counsel and made a significant contribution to improvement of the effectiveness of our foreign intelligence efforts. Your long and distinguished career of outstanding service to this country ahs been an inspiration for all Americans." Usual folds, else fine condition with a bold signature.
