Description:

(1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Good presentation of two signed items, includes: A.L.S., 1p. 4to. (sight), New York, May 10, 1983, to Duke University classmate Col. Alfred L. "Pee Wee" Owens. Nixon offers a personal reminisce, in full: "When I learned from John Sundholm that the class of '38 was celebrating its 45th reunion I was reminded of those excellent meals we used to get in the coffee shop where you served so efficiently. What I remember most was that in those depression years the price of a steak dinner was only 50 cents! Today that wouldn't even cover a modest tip. But looking back they were good years & you helped make them so." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. The ink is somewhat faded throughout, with slight, even toning, else very good. Also present is an I.S.P., 8" x 10" color (sight), a seated portrait in suit and tie. Nixon signs beneath the image in blue ink, adding the dedication "To Colonel Alfred 'Pee Wee' Owens with warm regards", as well as the date "5-15-83" and "L.LB Duke '37". The two pieces are mounted together in a leather holder within a gilt wood frame.
