Description:

A fine example of a very rare American target pistol, a Remington Arms Co. Navy Framed Target Model of 1891, 8 3/4" barrel, 15" overall, in .22-caliber, utilizing Remington's versatile "rolling block" action. The barrel is half-round, half-octagonal, and features a knife-blade front sight and an adjustable buckhorn-style rear sight. The barrel is blued while the frame originally showed case-hardened colors, faded to grey on this example. The left-hand side of the frame is marked "Remingtons Ilion N.Y. U.S.A." over "Pat. May 3d Nov 15th 1864 April 17th 1866". The right-hand side of the frame bears the military inspection marks "P" over "F.C.W." The serial number "83" appears on the underside of the octagonal portion of the barrel beneath the forearm, and again inside the forearm itself. The grip and forearm are of oiled walnut. The bore shows some grime and pitting, with wear to the crown, but the rifling remains distinct. The action cocks and fires sharply as built, the extractor functions perfectly and the breach shows some storage grease and grime, but no flaws. The blued finish of the barrel shows some fading, with some oxidation freckling throughout the frame, and with some dings and handling marks to the wood furniture. NRA grade fine to excellent. It is estimated that Remington produced only about 100 of these pistols between 1891 and 1900, making this example highly desirable.
