Description:

RELICS OF THE H.M.S. HOOD
British battle cruiser of the Royal Navy launched on August 22, 1918. She stayed in Her Majesty's Service until May 24, 1941 when she was subsequently sunk by the German Battleship Bismarck. An interesting lot of two souvenir signal flags approximately half-scale, representing the letter "B" and the number "2", believed to have once been used aboard the H.M.S. Hood during exercises performed in the late 1920's. The first is comprised of blue fabric sewn into a cross, machine stitched and applied to four swatches of white cloth. The halyard is intact but it is doubtful it is comprised of the original rope. The second flag comprises a red piece of fabric that has been sewn into a larger piece of white cloth and further, attached to a blue border, through machine stitching, measuring 46" x 34". Both flags show extensive weathering with some discoloration and a few small holes, otherwise they are in very good condition. From the personal collection of World War II and Civil War historian Michael Miner. Miner's thirty-year collection was built through an extensive system of contacts he developed with artifact hunters and diggers in Europe and the Far East, and he maintained careful records of the items he amassed.
