Description:

RARE POST-APPOMATTOX "CANBY" PAROLE
An especially rare Civil War post-Appomattox surrender parole issued to a Confederate soldier, a partly-printed D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Gainseville, Ala., , May, 1865, signed in type by Major Gen. Edwin S. Canby. In this example, Pvt. W. J. Johnston of the 18th Cavalry Reg. of Mississippi Vols., a resident of Hernando DeSoto Co., Miss., is paroled and allowed to return home. Signed at bottom by Union Brig. General ELIAS S. DENNIS (1812-1894). The verso is additionally signed by Pvt. Johnston's commanding officer, Capt. W. A. Raines who certifies that the soldier is "...the true and lawful owner of one horse...". Very good. "Canby" paroles are much rarer than the better-known ones issued at Appomattox, and are among the last ones issued during the Civil War. Most such paroles were issued in Louisiana and Texas. Examples from Alabama are much rarer. Usual folds, else very good condition.
