Description:

RAIN IN THE FACE
(1835 - 1905) Sioux warrior who joined in the Fetterman massacre for which he was later arrested by George Custer. The Indian won his revenge at Little Big Horn, where it is believed he killed both George and Tom Custer, eating Tom's heart for good measure. Extremely rare S.P., a titled cabinet card photograph, 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" sepia, a U.S. Army photo credited to George E. Spencer showing the chief from the waist, up seated and in native garb. The photo was published for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago and is signed "Rain in the Face" in pencil (which was his custom) on the verso. The image was most likely signed at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 when Rain in the Face was touring with Buffalo Bill: the great chief would oblige autograph seekers in exchange for a small fee. The card is very clean with only extremely light soiling to the bottom of the mount, else very fine condition.
