RAIDING A SUNKEN UNION STEAMER
A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton of the 26th North Carolina, 2pp. 4to., Carolina Ciy, N.C., Nov. 11, 1861 to his father reporting on Union naval mishaps: "...The storm that as on the ocean and coast of last friaday & saturday destroyed [sic] several of Lincon[']s war vessels there was one blowed a shore on sunday morning fifteen miles from this place it was a new Iron Steamer called the union it has not been more than two months since it was finished it was loaded with Horses, Wagons, Guns Ammunition provisions &c &c the greater portion of the property was distroyed their crew consisting of 76 men were all saved and surrendered themselves to us on sunday evening as prisoners of war...we let the camp on sunday night...and reached the wreck at day break we remained there for seven days without any tents and subsisted on fisherman[']s potatoes and yankee Butter and beef that was saved on the wreck we have saved about thirty thousand dollars worth of machinery...on last thursday there was a Lincoln Ship cam[e] within 300 yards of the wreck where we were at work we expected they were going to try us there was eight of them come ashore under a flag of truce and talked with our Capt. and Maj. they wanted to know what had become of the ships crew Their major told them that we had taken care of the crew and were feeding them well and they soon went back to the ship. it may be that they will attack us soon though they may not they are still about here as usual. you cannot tell how it pleased our boys to get the chance to take the yankees. We got one yankee that fought us at manassa[s] and he told how he run to save himself in that fight but we have him at last. they were from Maine New hampshire and Cannicticut [sic] they were well dressed for winter..." Usual folds, a few contemporary ink smudges, else fine.
