(RAID ON ST. NAZAIRE) MICHAEL WYNN
(1917 – 1998) British peer and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve officer who played a decisive role during the St. Nazaire Raid in 1942 where he commanded a Motor Torpedo Boat. Captured after his boat had to be abandoned, he was sent to Colditz after an escape attempt. Fine pair of signed items, includes: fine content T.L.S. with his title 'Newborough', 1p. 4to., Corwen, Aug. 22, 1994 to an admirer, in part: '...I enclose a postcard size of the painting done by John Worsley and my boat MTB-74 is at the centre on the left and you will see it has the torpedo tubes mounted on the bow...it shows very vividly how the Campbeltown hit the lock gates to the dry dock right in the centre. The most vivid impression I had...was seeing all the flak and wondering when we were going to be hit...[and] when the shore battery hit us with a shell and set us on fire when we were going down the estuary...' Toned bars on the letter with a ragged top margin, else very good. WITH: the aforementioned postcard, signed on the verso. Two pieces.
