QUARTERMASTER'S ACCOUNT BOOK A very fine content ledger kept by New York Quatermaster Nicholas Quakenbush (1775-1783), 26pp. folio, [Albany, c. 1783]. Qackenbush served as Assistant Deputy Quartermaster with the rank of Major and served throughout the war at Albany. He would prove critical in supplying Continental forces opposing Burgoyne in 1777, as well as the main army under Washington. The ledger concerns settlements with various suppliers and vendors to the Continental Army together with prominent officers. The names include numerous important New Yorkers including Anthony Wayne, Philip Schuyler, Marinus Willet, William Pemberton and Abraham Ten Broeck. In addition numerous prominent families' names appear, including Beekman, DeWitt, Van Renselear, Van Schanck, and even Van Buren! All accounts are "To the United States" and include a wide variety of supplies and expenses. Henry Bogart submitted a bill for £25.11.4 which included "105 Pounds of White rope ", "16 Pounds Deck nails ", "2 Soldier Coats by Leonard Van Buren ", and "6 pounds of Tallow " among other things. General Schuyler billed £53 for variety of items including "Shoeing 17 Horses ", "17 Bushels of lime ", and "Making 4 Candlesticks... " A fascinating record worthy of further research. Simply bound with string. Margins somewhat rough with some chipping to first page, very light toning, otherwise very good. $500-700
