Description:

World War I-era German "Pickelhaube", constructed of lacquered black leather, with a brass circular plate at the crown bearing four rivets, topped with a 3 1/2" brass spike. The front bears a brass "wappen", or helmet plate, in the form of a crowned Imperial eagle clutching a scepter and sword with the motto "Mit Gott Fur Koenig Und Vaterland" ("With God for King and Fatherland"), on a banner across the breast, overlaid with a badge in the form of a sunburst with an eagle at center, surrounded by the motto "Suum Cuique" ("To Each His Own"). Together these images form the insignia of the Prussian Guard Infantry Corps. An ornamental leather chin strap, covered with overlapping brass plates, runs across the visor, secured by studs also fitted with correct mismatched cockades - black white and red, for the German Empire, on the left, and black and white on the right. The interior is fitted with a nine-fingered black leather liner, intact but lacking its adjustment cord. The exterior lacquer shows some bubbling, crackling and slight flaking overall, with minor verdigris to the brass fittings, else very good.
