Description:

PRO-CONFEDERATE MISSOURI GOVERNOR SEEKS FRIENDSHIP WITH LOCAL INDIANS
An excessively rare and important piece of legislation from the short-lived pro-Confederate Missouri legislature, 1p. folio, [Jefferson City] , May 17, 1861, headed; "An Act to Perpetuate Friendly Relations with Certain Indian Tribes", in which the legislature decrees: "...the governor of the state is hereby authorized to appoint one or more commissioners whose duty it shall be to visit the Indian tribes near the border of the state of Missouri for the purpose of encouraging and maintaining friendship and amity between such tribes and this state...". It is worth noting that this legislation occurred one day after the federal troops captured the pro confederate Militia which had gathered to take the St. Louis arsenal. Apparently the pro confederate government was looking for friends from any source.
