PRISON SHIP H.M.S. JERSEY
DAVID LAIRD (1739-1815) British captain of the HMS Jersey from 1778-1782. HMS Jersey was a 60-gun fourth rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy and launched on 14 June 1736. In 1780 she was converted to a prison ship and was used by the British during the Revolutionary War at Wallabout Bay, New York. Up to 1,100 men were imprisoned on board a ship designed for a 400-man complement of sailors. Fine content war-date A.L.S. 1p. folio, written aboard the Jersey off New York, Nov. 2, 1779 to the ship's quartermaster Thomas Thomas. In part: '... I having received information that a Sloop is loading at Sea Brook and as you are thoroughly acquainted with that place you will proceed without loss of time in the best manner you shall see proper, and if you can with safety to yourself and who you take with you, you will seize and bring off the said sloop, and make the best of your way with her to New York...' Water stain on both top and bottom, a 3 in. split on blank integral leaf, some offsetting, otherwise very good.
