Description:

Historically important grouping of six contemporary bound trial briefs prepared by key American prosecutors and given during the Nuremberg Trials to Major ROBERT G. STEPHENS, JR. (1913-2003). Stephens served on the staff of Robert H. Jackson, the U.S. Supreme Court Justice that served as the chief prosecutor for the United States during the trials. Stephens had lived in Germany prior to the outbreak of the war, and later served in the O.S.S. under William J. Donovan. He was tapped by Jackson to serve as a senior prosecutor in the major War Crimes Trials, but was not present by the time the trials concluded. Stephens and Jackson would have used these briefs extensively in their prosecution of the chief war criminals. These volumes, all bound in blue leather, contain period printed copies of briefs signed by Stephens' fellow prosecutors, were given to Stephens at the time his departure (ca. mid-1946) in remembrance of his service. The very detailed contents of these briefs were undoubtedly used to convict the Nazi war criminals. Included is: 'BRIEF ON...THE SS INCLUDING...THE SD', by Maj. WARREN F. FARR, JAGD, inscribed to Stephens and noting this is a 'preliminary draft. I would shudder to have him scrutinize ever the finished product...', 36pp; 'THE GESTAPO AND THE SD AND ERNST KALTENBRUNNER', by Lt. WHITNEY R. HARRIS, USNR, Nov. 10, 1945, inscribed and signed, 70pp.; 'CRIMINALITY OF THE...LEADERSHIP CORPS OF THE NAZI PARTY' by Lt. THOMAS F. LAMBERT, USNR, Nov. 10, 1945, inscribed and signed, 76pp.; 'BRIEF ON THE REICH CABINET', by Lt. W. S. KAPLAN, USNR and KATHERINE FITE, inscribed to Stephens and signed by both, approx. 40pp.; 'THE CONSPIRATORS PLACED THEIR DOMINATED ORGANIZATIONS ON A PROGRESSIVELY MILITARIZED BASIS, COUNT ONE', BY Lt. MORTON E. ROME, USNR, signed, 8pp. with chart; and 'The Nazi conspirators sought to subvert the influence of the churches over the people of Germany', inscribed and signed by Lt. ROBERT MARTIN, 21pp. All are only very lightly toned, and generally in fine condition. Incredible detail in these briefs, the texts of which we are unable to locate online. WITH: four candid photographs, each about 3 x 4 in., showing Stephens and fellow prosecutors, construction of the court at Nuremberg, officers, etc.
