POLISH PRISONERS ARE SENT TO INFILTRATE ALLIED LINES IN ITALY
Fascinating group of four documents, three signed, 4pp. total. May 19-23, 1944, Italy and Auschwitz, Poland. An effort is made to enlist a Polish prisoner at Auschwitz against the Allied effort in Italy. The first document it a T.L.S., 1p. 4to., from a sturmbannfuhrer to a major in the SS Reg. "Kurt Eggers." In part: "...I have has a conversation today with Major Couth Thun, Intelligence Officer for espionage/sabotage....responsible for the entire range of counter intelligence in Italy...seven Poles will be assigned to Count Thun who will send them to the other side...dropping them off at the coast...They will pass them themselves off as Poles who had been living in Italy who had been in hiding...Olpinski must be in prison or in a concentration camp...Count Thun...wants to use him too..." There follows a received copy of a telegram , 1p. 4to, May 23, 1944: " the Pole Opinski who has been requested is in the Auschwitz camp...". Two initialed letters are also present, each 1p. oblong 8vo., one May 23, 1944 advising that the RSHA advises that the prisoner is still alive and will be brought forward, and a T.L.S, June 6, 1944 advising that a transfer is no longer possible because: "...he died in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp on Jan. 4, 1944..." Very good.
