771. GIDEON J. PILLOW (1806-1878) Confederate major general, who fought at Belmont and was second-in-command at Fort Donelson from which he fled to avoid capture by Grant. Bold signature and rank dating from the Mexican War: "Gid. J. Pillow Majr. Gen. U.S.A." matted with the cover of Harper's Weekly, Mar. 15, 1862 showing Fort Donelson and the attack of the 2nd Iowa on the Confederate artillery positions thereat (Gideon is largely to blame for the Confederate defeat at Fort Donelson), also matted with a silvered copy of a photo of Pillow, all double-matted and nicely framed. Signature is fine. $150-200
