Description:

94. ALBERT PIKE (1809-1891) Confederate brigadier general who led Indians fighting for the Confederacy at Pea Ridge. He resigned in protest over the treatment of his Indian soldiers. Interesting A.L.S. "Albert Pike", 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Feb. 6, 1871, in which Master Mason Albert Pike discusses some rare works on the subject of Masonry. In part: "...I have some mss [manuscripts] of Templar and Royal Arch works, copied for me by a brother in London, and a Royal Arch Ritual, Master Mark Mason etc. that came from the West Indies in 1796. They are all in mss... there is so much risk of loss in sending these things about that if I ever get them back I shall not be willing to let them go out of my possession again..." While known to many as a general, Pike's more lasting contributions are probably in the promotion of Masonry. A gifted writer, among his many works on the subject is Morals and Dogma, a work central to, the beliefs of the Masonic order. Along with a 4pp. octavo sized pamphlet in tribute to Pike's memory published, as was the custom, by fellow Masons on the ninth anniversary of his death. Both letter and memorial pamphlet are in very good to near fine condition. $200-300
