PHILIPE PETAIN
(1856 - 1951) French marshal who defended Verdun in World War I, later Premier of Nazi-sympathetic Vichy France. Typed D.S. 1p. legal folio, [n.p.], Mar. 14, 1919, a Division Citation in French, in part: "...After approval by the Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces, the Marshal of France, [Petain] Commander-in-Chief of the Armies of the East makes this Division Citation: THE AMERICAN MEDICAL UNIT 586 (FORMERLY SSU 64)...took part in all divisional operations from Aug. 30, 1917 to Aug. 21, 1918. Unfailingly inspired admiration for its enthusiasm, its defiance of danger, its bravery, its joyous spirit, its spirit of camaraderie and remarkable skill shown by all the drivers of the Section. Gave proof of its splendid spirit of...in particular...evacuation of the wounded and contact with the enemy...on a road swept by enemy machine gun fire...transported the wounded and gassed in the most difficult and dangerous conditions...". Boldly signed at conclusion, fine condition.

Shipment is sent USPS priority, USPS International Express (for most overseas) or UPS Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature required, unless other arrangements are made.
