Description:

PHILIP KEARNY
(1815 - 1862) Union major general known as 'Kearny the Magnificent' for his commands in the Mexican War and abroad. Served with distinction at Glendale, Williamsburg, and Fair Oaks despite having only one arm from an older wound. Killed in action while leading troops at the Battle of Chantilly. War-date A.E.S. as commander of the First New Jersey Brigade, [n.p.], Oct. 30, 1861, on the verso of an A.L.S. from Capt. James M. Wilson addressed to Kearny, requesting that two clerks be promoted. Kearny pens his endorsement and approves the request: ‘If there be vacancies of Corporals in companies of these Privates I find them entitled to promotion for good conduct.' He signs ‘P Kearny' in black ink, adding his rank ‘B. Gen'l. Corps.' Shows original mailing folds with some pinholes thereto, slight paper loss from original wax seals at the bottom edge from Kearny's endorsement, very good overall. Capt. Wilson would be killed in battle at Williamsburg, Virginia on May 5, 1862. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Kearny, with an inset image of combat at Chantilly and with his facsimile signature below.
