770. WILLIAM H. PENROSE (1832-1903) Union brigadier general who was the original colonel of the 15th New Jersey fighting at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Cedar Creek were he was severely wounded. An early post-war partly-printed "W. H. Penrose" adding rank, 1p. 12mo., Philadelphia, Sept. 1, 1865, a check issued to the general for the sum of ten dollars. Endorsed by Regular army Capt. Henry Bowman who was captured at Ball's Bluff while captain in the 15th Mass. Later he served as major of the 34th Mass, colonel of the 36h Mass. and was at one time Gen. Orlando Willcox's chief of staff. $75-100
