95. WILLIAM H. PAYNE (1830-1904) Confederate brigadier general who as colonel in Stuart's ride around the Union army during the Gettysburg campaign was wounded and captured. Later he commanded forces at 3rd Winchester and Cedar Creek. War date A.D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., "Headquarters Warrenton", Sept. 29, 1862, a General order appointing "...Inman H. Payne...acting Commissary of Subsistence at the post and will immediately enter upon his duties..." Light toning at margins light fold, otherwise very good. $700-900
