Description:

PAUL TROOST'S PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE 'BAUN HAUS' AND 'FUHRERBAU'
PAUL TROOST (1878 – 1934) German architect. A favorite master builder of Adolf Hitler from 1930, his Neoclassical designs for the Fuhrerbau, the Braun Haus and the Haus der Kunst in Munich influenced the style of Nazi architecture. Troost also redesigned Konigsplatz in Munich to include new Nazi Party buildings and a 'Temple of Honor'. Hitler's relationship to Troost was that of a pupil to an admired teacher. According to Albert Speer, the Führer would impatiently greet Troost with the words: 'I can't wait, Herr Professor. Is there anything new? Let's see it!' Troost would then lay out his latest plans and sketches. Hitler frequently declared, according to Speer, that 'he first learned what architecture was from Troost'. Historic lot of 11 original photographs from Troost's own files, all backstamped either 'PROFESSOR P. L. TROOST ARCHITEKT.' with a Heinrich Hoffman photo credit, or simply 'ATELIER TROOST', three with holograph notes (probably in Troost's hand) on the verso. The photos include: five 9 x 7 in. interior views of the 'Braun Haus', the Nazi Party headquarters in Munich; four 9 x 7 in. interior and exterior views of the 'Fuhrerbau', the site of Hitler's Munich office; and two 9 x 3.25 in. photos of models of the block upon which the Braun Haus was located, likely created with the intent of redeveloping the entire area in buildings incorporating the same architectural style. Also included is a 9 x 7 in. b/w press photo showing Troost's swastika-emblazoned tomb festooned with flowers and wreaths. Very good to fine.
