Description:

PAUL SIGNAC
(1863 - 1935) French Impressionist painter, with Seurat a developer of Pointillism and a principal Neo-Impressionist, known for his watercolors of landscapes and seascapes. A.L.S. signed twice "P. Signac" and "Paul Signac", 2pp. 8vo., St. Tropez, Mar. 2, 1914, in French to an art critic, possibly Louis Vauxcelles. In part: "...I have taken ill and I'm really tired...This is the second time in 30 years that I'll miss the Independents [salon]. This year I'll get to know them only through you. So what a joy it is to read and re-read your review...Thanks to you I can see my comrades' pictures...as well as others. I thank you for this pleasure and also, with emotion, for your good lines about what I sent you. I am very happy that you liked my Pont-Neuf...". He adds in a holograph postscript: "For publicity purposes and as a sample, please allow me to offer you...a small piece of work...It's the Aide-Memoire Stendhalian. I had to do something to while away the difficult December nights...". Signac was President of the Society of Independent Artists from 1908 until his death. His work, "Aide-Memoire Stendhal-Beyle", a biographical work of the author Stendhal, was published in 1914, the year of this letter. Fine.
