Description:

PAUL I
(1874 - 1801) Emperor of Russia (1796-1801), son of Peter III and Catherine the Great who succeeded Catherine, instituted reforms to help the serfs thereby angering the nobility. Assassinated. A rare A.L.S. "Paul" 2pp. 8vo., Aug. 27, 1789, in French to Gen. Count Alexander Christoforovich von Benckendorf, in part: "...I am grateful to have received your letters of the 21st, 22nd and 23rd with enclosures. The disposition [of forces] might be a good one, although I'm not even sure of that. But this is absolutely not for our troops. Furthermore, my friend, I hope that on another occasion you will have more faith in my words after the proof that you have just been given. I suppose they wanted you to do without Merpaud's work. Accept my condolences for Varages. That was a consequence of his post. Deep down, you know I am right. I was troubled by your indisposition and am pleased it has passed...". Fine.
