Description:

PAPERS OF MELVILLE E. INGALLS
A good collection of approximately fifty pieces including letters and documents written or pertaining to MELVILLE EZRA INGALLS (1842 - 1914), a prominent late-19th century railroad executive. Born in Maine, he attended Harvard and served a term in the Massachusetts legislature before becoming a full time attorney. It was in this capacity that he became involved in railroads, first as counsel to the Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad and later as its president. After several consolidations, he became President of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis (the Big Four Railroad). The collection also includes a lengthy essay, presumably prepared for a public address, on the intricacies of property rights versus rights of way and water rights, issues quite important to railroad owners. A very good collection worthy of further research and study. Overall very good condition.
