Description:

PAOLO TOSTI
(1846-1916) Italian-British composer of songs during the Belle Epoque, also a teacher of music. Scarce A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Folkestone [England], Oct. 1, 1909, in Italian to a friend, in part: "...Thank you for the letter from 'the President of the Maccaboeans [sic]', and for the kind invitation...but even more thanks for your short and affectionate letter! I am so very sorry to not be able to accept the invitation because I...am having a friend over for dinner....I hope to see you again soon in London...". The Maccabeans, also known as "The Wandering Jews", was a social club founded around 1891 by English journalist Asher I. Myers and populated by young intellectuals who gathered informally to discuss topics of Jewish interest. At the time of this letter, it appears that Solomon J. Solomon was president of the group, and to whom Tosti may refer. Boldly penned in his stylized hand. Tape remnant at middle fold, clear of text, otherwise very good condition.
