Description:

Turkish yatagan single-edged sword with scabbard, split pommel with images of halberds and pikes, the 19 in. steel blade still sharp but showing oxidation. Scabbard also bears quality workmanship, some oxidation at bottom edge near dray. One side of pommel is splitting, else very good. The Yatagan sword was very popular, not only in Turkey, but also in many Balkan states, and some Eastern European countries such as Ukraine and Hungary. From the estate of JOHN G. ERHARDT (1889-1951) who served in Greece, as Consul in Hamburg and later in London under Ambassador Joseph Kennedy. During the war, he was in a high-level State Department position in Washington, where he was involved in the planning of the surrender of Germany and occupation of Germany and Austria. After the war, he served as de facto Ambassador to Austria and as political adviser to Gen. Mark Clark, who led the American occupation military forces in Austria.
