Lot 489
ARISTOTLE ONASSIS (1906-1975) Greek shipping tycoon and a friend of both John and Jacqueline Kennedy, married Jackie in 1968 but eventually the two grew distant, and in the end, he willed her but a tiny fraction of his vast fortune. We have to admit, this is probably the strangest lot we've ever offered...but we simply couldn't resist. How else could we give our clients a chance to own a piece of Aristotle Onassis' riches? To be exact, we are the lucky auctioneers of seven of the Greek tycoon's gold-filled molars, removed by his dentist around 1949-50. And these weren't cheap - according to one calculation, there's about one troy ounce of gold here. The teeth were extracted by Dr. H. Justine Ross and are accompanied by about 13pp. of Ari's dental records and two sets of his x-rays. All of the records are from 1946 to 1954, as he approached the height of his career. These little gems were removed to make way for a bridge that the 40 year-old high-roller needed to replace the chompers ravaged by too much champagne, crepes suzette, and obvious neglect. Also included is a letter from the doctor to Onassis urging him to contact her for a follow-up visit, as well as a signed Christmas card "A.S. Onassis" sent to the doctor (separated at fold, lightly toned). The rather nasty, gold-laden teeth are what they are, contained in a glass jar. They worked for Ari - he made billions - and got Jackie - and kept his money. Could they work for a new owner? Obviously sold as-is, with no warrant of merchantability for future use. $800-1,200
