Description:

ON V-E DAY, EISENHOWER CELEBRATES WITH A GIFT OF FOOD SENT FROM THE STATES
A terrific letter written by DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (1890-1969), the calm and ever-modest commander of SHAEF, on the very day of the German surrender in Berlin, warmly thanking a friend in the states for sending him a basket of fruit on "Victory in Europe Day." On May 8, 1945, Ike writes to George and Anthony Pecora, owners of a fruit company in Chicago, who must have gone to great pains to have fresh fruit delivered to Eisenhower, then most likely SHAEF Headquarters in Reims. The general writes them on his 6 x 8 inch personal SHAEF "Office of the Supreme Commander" letterhead, in part: "By coincidence your magnificent gift of fruits arrived on Victory in Europe Day. I can think of nothing nicer to enable me personally to celebrate something toward which we have worked for so many months. I truly thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity" Tiny tape mounting stains in the extreme corners, otherwise in fine condition, with a beautiful signature of the future president. Undoubtedly Eisenhower's friends and staff were celebrating wildly after four years of war, and Ike could hold his drink as well as any of them but a gift of fresh fruit sent to a soldier was appreciated more than almost anything!
