Description:

OMAHA BEACH INVASION PLANS AND MAP OVERLAYS, USED BY AN OFFICER WHO LANDED ON D-DAY
Historic set of plans for OPERATION NEPTUNE, the D-Day landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, this set specifically prepared for those to land on the desperately-contested Omaha Beach. This set also includes map overlays used by an officer who landed on the first day of the invasion. The report bears a cover page reading: "115TH REGT NEPTUNE FIELD ORDER NO. 1 23 - MAY, 1944" and is marked as being "COPY NO. 30" of only fifty issued for landings on that strip of sand. Within this legal folio wrapper is contained 26pp. of text, each page marked "TOP SECRET" and "BIGOT." This is an operational guide meant for field commenders. It contains a summary of orders and initial objectives in the first pages, followed by anticipated intelligence gathering and counter-intelligence actions, communication restrictions, a ship assignment table showing which personnel, their number and vehicle would be assigned to which vessels, a landing diagram showing which vessels were to land on the beach and specifying times, rations and ammo replenishment, evacuation of wounded, signals, and a great deal more. Of great interest are four map overlays, two legible and apparently used in planning. One is marked "Fox [Beach]" and may have been prepared on the scene to position assets for the advance inland. This is an extraordinarily rare set of plans : Omaha Beach field orders from an identified officer who landed on that beach on June 6, 1944! Also included in the lot are 15 individual 22" x 10 1/2" color printed maps, staple bound, showing the the various movements of American forces in Normandy from their landing points on June 6, 1944 to the V Corps attack on June 12-13. These maps appear to have been printed during the campaign. These documents were issued to and used by Col. Stratford E. McKenrick (1913-1992) who was a senior member of the headquarters staff of the 110th Field Artillery, 29th Infantry Division. On June 6, 1944 McKenrick and elements of that division landed on one of the "Fox" landing zones on Omaha Beach to establish observation points and offload ammunition. The ammunition was soon struck by enemy fire, forcing McKenrick's contingent to temporarily withdraw. With letter of provenance from the officer's daughter.
