OLIVER HAZARD PERRY
(1785-1819) Naval officer known as "The Hero of Lake Erie" for capturing the British fleet in 1813. In his report to General William Henry Harrison, he wrote: "We have met the enemy and they are ours". Scarce A.L.S. 1p. 4to., South Ferry, Aug. 8, 1818 to Edward Wilcox, the Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, in full: "Permit me to introduce to you the Revd. Mr. Wheaton Rector of Trinity Church in Newport. He visits Charlestown for the purpose of making inquiry into the state of Episcopal Church in that Town. any aid that you may render him will be duly acknowledged". South Ferry is located across Narragansett Bay from Newport, and Charleston is on the Long Island Sound in southwestern, Rhode Island. The Rev. Samuel Wheaton was rector of Trinity Church, the oldest Episcopal parish in Rhode Island. Addressed on verso in Perry's hand to "The Honble Edward Wilcox Charlestown". Usual folds, else very good condition.
