NELSON MILES IS ORDERED TO PURSUE THE NEZ PERCE
Fine content retained copy of a telegram sent by Brig. Gen. Alfred H. Terry to Col. Nelson A. Miles at Fort Keogh in Montana Terr., 2pp. 4to., St. Paul, May 7, 1878, very cryptic instructions, in part: "...The Nez Perce and [interpreter] Ben Clark have gone to Ft. Buford. You must make arrangements for sending them into British Territory [Canada] - for that purpose you can start them from Poplar Creek...General Terry desires you to make the arrangements and to give Ben Clark instructions in accordance with your own views as to the best methods to achieve the objective to be obtained. If the Nez Perce now on British soil come over and surrender they should be brought to Ft. Buford...for transportation to their own people at Leavenworth... ". This copy signed by Adjutant George W. Baird. File holes at left margin, else very good. Miles was likely in pursuit of renegades, as Chief Joseph had surrendered in October, 1877.
