Description: NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST
(1821 - 1877) Confederate lieutenant general of Tennessee cavalry and arguably the greatest cavalry officer in history, he raided and harassed Union forces and supply lines with great effect throughout the war. Excessively rare signed bond "N. B. Forrest" as president of the Selma, Marion and Memphis Rail Road Company, 1p. folio, [n.p., n.d.], a 7% $1,000 or 200 British Pound First Mortgage Bond No. 4,222 with 55 coupons still attached. Boldly signed at bottom, some edge chips and two fold tears easily closed, else generally very good. After the war, Forrest settled in Memphis, Tennessee, building a house on a bank of the Mississippi River. With slavery abolished, the former slave trader suffered a major financial setback. He later found employment at the Selma-based Marion & Memphis Railroad and eventually became the company president. He was not as successful in railroad promoting as in war, and under his direction the company went bankrupt. Forrest spent his final days running a prison work farm on President's Island in the Mississippi River. Forrest's bonds in U.S. dollars are scarce, those in British pounds are very rare indeed!
