Description:
(1766 - 1813) French marshal under Napoleon who rose to that rank from private, a most competent and reliable general killed by a cannonball at Rippach. Fine content manuscript L.S. as the 'Duke of Istria', 1p. 8vo., Aug. 5, 1812, in Russia and commanding the Guard Cavalry, sent to an unknown fellow general one month before Borodino and just days before Polotsk. Largely untranslated, but undoubtedly of superior content, mentioning in part: 'le general [Pierre David Edouard de] Colbert...you were warned by the general that he had spotted Cossacks [near you]...that he also appeared on the road to Pollotsk I think that since you were established, he has been doing it a service...be ready and on guard for any event...I sent this evening a post of 25 light cavalrymen to Lettsoui on the road to Pollotsk...' Very good. The First Battle of Polotsk, which took place five days after this letter was written, saw Russian troops under the command of Peter Wittgenstein fight French and Bavarian troops led by Nicolas Oudinot near the city of Polotsk, halting Oudinot's advance toward Saint Petersburg.
