Description:

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE'S PERSONAL CASSOULETTE
A wonderful relic from Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, his personal silver 'cassoulette' in which he was served his single portion meals, most liekely while in exile on St. Helena. The 6 in. diameter pan with 3.75 in. ebony handle bears two sculpted doves with an arrow beneath affixed to the center of the lid. Napoleon's coat of arms is expertly rendered on the lid, engraved in a period style. The same engraving also appears on the front of the body of the cassoulette as well. The interior of both the lid and body appear to be lightly gilt-washed. Both the underside of the lid and the the body of the piece bear several hallmarks, one a letter 'B' with a seated figure, from Napoleon's premier metalsmith Martin-Guillaume Biennais (1764-1843), the other a rooster with the number '1'. This piece bears the same twin dove embellishment as pieces found in his kit now preserved at the Musee Carnavalet, donated to the City of Paris by General Betrand in 1840. One of Biennais' invoices found with the collection further supports Napoleon's ordering of these pieces while exiled. Fine condition. From the most noted collection of Napoleon's personal possessions in private hands, in Paris. Complete provenance, specifically that from the current collection owner, will be made available to the ultimate purchaser.
