Description:

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
(1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. Manuscript L.S. "Napole", 1p. 4to., Fontainebleau, Oct. 4, 1810, to his Minister of War, Henri Clarke, Duke de Feltre. In part: "...Write to Gen. Baraguey d'Hilliers to inform him that you are putting five battalions of good and old troops at his disposition and that the cavalry regiment and the squadrons of foot soldiers...eight battalions of good troops will arrive in November...". The "good and old" troops were mostly French soldiers, in contrast to the numerous Germans and Italians Napoleon conscripted from reluctant allies in the last years of the empire. General Louis Baraguey d'Hilliers (1764-1813) participated in many important campaigns, accompanied Napoleon to Egypt and served as Jacques McDonald's chief of staff. Very fine.
