Description:

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
(1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. Fine content L.S. "Napole", 1p. 4to., Paris, Apr. 3, 1810, to another king or royal regarding his recent marriage to Marie Louise, Archduchess of Austria. On March 10, 1811, Napoleon married the 18-year-old member of the House of Hapsbourg by proxy, with the official religious ceremony taking place on April 1, two days before this letter. Napoleon mentions this occasion at "his Chapel at the Louvre", adding: "...I hope that this event...at my Maison Imperiale will equally assure the prosperity of our People...". Of course, Napoleon is referring to his desire to strengthen bonds with the Austrian Empire in general, and in particular by producing a legitimate heir. Indeed, this wish came to pass in March 1811, with the birth of Joseph Charles Bonaparte, King of Rome. Penned in a fine secretarial hand. Very good to near fine condition.
