Description:

NAMED ROYAL NAVY OFFICER''S SWORD AND BELT
British Royal Navy Officer''s Sword, 31 1/2" blade, 37" overall, of the type standardized in 1929. Both sides of the blade are finely engraved with a floral motif, with the Royal Navy insignia of a crown over a fouled anchor on the obverse side, with the royal cipher of King George V on the reverse. The obverse ricasso also bears the Royal Coat of Arms above a hallmark inset with a small brass medallion, while the reverse bears the faintly acid-etched maker''s name "Gieves". The hilt is brass, with the Royal Navy insignia at the top of the hand guard. The pommel is in the form of a lion''s head, with the main forming the backstrap of the grip. The grip itself is covered with ray skin, wrapped with braided brass wire. A flap on the handguard folds down, securing the sword within the scabbard by means of a hole and peg. This flap is engraved on the underside with the name of the owner: "A.H. Browne, R.N." A braided blue and gold portapee is attached to the hilt. The scabbard is black leather over wood, with brass drag, hanging loops and throat. Attached to the hanging loops is an unrelated Italian officer''s dress uniform shoulder belt, with badges in the shape of a crowned eagle and a shield bearing the cipher of King Vittorio Emmanuel. The brass fittings bear slight dark patination, and those on the scabbard are slightly loose, and there is some wear and slight flaking to the scabbard leather, else very good.
