Description:

766. CHARLES H. MORGAN (1834-1875) Union brigadier general who commanded a corps at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Cold Harbor. Fine content A.L.S, 2pp. 4to., Raleigh, Feb. 22, 1872, a lengthy recounting to a fellow general of his recollection of having seen an imprint of a "bloody hand" on a sign ten miles from Washington, only two days after John Wilkes Booth had been killed. The imprint was only visible at a certain angle, but Morgan seems convinced that there was a very good possibility it was the print of the injured assassin. Fine condition. $100-150
