MONTGOMERY BLAIR
(1813-1883) American politician and lawyer who represented Dred Scott before the Supreme Court, and later served as Postmaster General for President Lincoln during the Civil War. Fine association war-date A.N.S. ‘M Blair', 1p. oblong 12mo., Washington, D.C., Sep. 26, 1862, instructing the postmaster in Philadelphia to: ‘Let L. C. Baker examine letters under orders from the State Department.' He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding the initials of his title ‘P M G'. Shows horizontal folds and one or two spots of fixing at left, with a pencil notation at lower left, otherwise in very good condition. LAFAYETTE C. BAKER (1826-1868) was a Union Army officer and spy for General Winfield Scott, later chief of the National Detective Bureau, a precursor to the Secret Service. He was put in charge of the investigation into the Lincoln Assassination, and his men helped identify John Wilkes Booth as the killer.
