MONGOMERY MEIGS
(1816-1892) Union brigadier general and quartermaster general whose responsibilities included overseeing railroad, ship, and wagon transportation for the army. Instrumental in the establishment of Arlington National Cemetery. Two items: a manuscript L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, July 15, 1870, on Quartermaster General's letterhead to Representative J. H. Moore, in part: '…I have the honor to inform you that the claims in favor of John Ross, formerly a private in Co. A. 7th Regt. Ill. Cavalry, for value of a private horse, $129, alleged to have been taken from him at Memphis, Tenn., June 17, 1864, under orders of Genl. C. C. Washburn, has been suspended…'. WITH: a manuscript L.S., 2pp. 4to., [n.p.] Oct. 2, 1857 on his blind-embossed ‘Washington Aqueduct' lined letterhead to the Alabama Secretary of State, James H. Weaver, in part: '…Designing to place in the ceiling of the new Representative Hall, in the Extension of the U. S. Capitol, the arms of the several states of the Union, emblazoned on glass, I find difficulties in obtaining reliable copies…If you can send to this office a true copy of the arms…it will enable me to have them correctly represented…'. Folds, else very good. Two pieces.
