Description:

358. ROBERT A. MILLIKAN (1868-1953) American physicist, first to isolate the electron and measure its charge, investigated cosmic rays, Nobel Prize winner for physics (1923). Fine content T.L.S. on California Institute of Technology letterhead, 1p. 4to., Pasadena, Nov. 23, 1921 to Prof. K. Fajans in Munich. In part: "...It is very encouraging to know that the German physicists, and particularly Prof. Ehrenhaft...no longer defend the sub-electron, for the existence of which there has... [been] no shadow of evidence...I shall be delighted to send you reprints of some of my recent work...they deal with new spectroscopic evidence on the general subject of atomic structure, to which you have yourself contributed in so large a measure..." Near fine. Of course, Millikan was wrong: a number of particles smaller than the electron have since been discovered. Matted with a photograph and brass plaque, framed in wood. $300-400
