Description:

92. GEORGE G. MEADE (1815-1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War. A.L.S. as Commander of the Third Military District, 2pp. 4to., Atlanta, July 7, 1867 to R. B. Bullock, Provisional Governor of Georgia. He writes in part: "My attention has been called to the enclosed extract from the Intelligencer of today, which purports to give an account of the proceedings in the House of Representatives on the 4th inst...it is stated, that after the election of Speaker, you proceeded to the desk of Mr. Scott & apologized to him for not entertaining his motion, but as he [illeg.] were acting [illeg.] military views, he [illeg.] was constrained to pursue the course which he [illeg] had pursued. I refrain from making any comment on this statement till I receive your reply which I trust will be made with the least possible delay." Bullock, a Republican from New York, was elected Governor of Georgia in 1868 defeating John B. Gordon (who would soon head the Ku Klux Klan). His unwavering support for voting rights and equality for African Americans (as well as his corrupt governance) did not endear him to the white residents of the state. He was forced to flee the state when a Democratic majority was elected in 1870. Usual folds, else fine condition. $400-600
