Description:

MATTHEW W. RANSOM
(1826 - 1904) American Confederate politician turned brigadier general who fought in the Seven Days, Sharpsburg and Petersburg, wounded three times in the process. Fine content war-date A.L. (unsigned), 4pp. 8vo., Petersburg, Dec. 10, 1864. In part: '...We are in the midst of a snot and sleet - everything frozen up...Have mercy on the poor soldiers this winter...a column of Genl. Grant's army is moving on Weldon. I tried very hard to go torment them but Genl. Lee would not let me go, so I bear it patiently. I have sent out directions to move everything of value necessary and am very glad that the fear of losing property does not distress me...It is unnecessary to write you of any of Genl. Grant's movements, as you will hear before this reaches you...Lee cannot afford to lose Weldon - If so he must evacuate Virginia and he will hate very much to do that...' Regrettably very light due to the use of 'adversity' ink, but still legible with diligence, a hole at vertical central fold causing loss of a few letters of text. Estimated accordingly. Interesting to note that in the postwar years, Ransom himself would move to Weldon.
