MATTHEW BRADY IMAGE OF THE VIRGINIA 20TH HEAVY ARTILLERY BATTALION
Rare photograph, a fine example of work from Matthew Brady's "Brady's Album Gallery", b/w, 3" x 5", entitled, "Maj. Robertson's Battery of Horse Artillery". The image, "No. 439" in the Brady Album gallery, features Virginia's 20th Heavy Artillery Battalion cavalrymen lined up in formation behind rows of horse-drawn cannon. The photograph was taken by James F. Gibson near Richmond, Va. in June, 1862. Major James E. Robertson commanded the 20th Heavy Artillery Battalion, which was first organized into service in June of 1862 (this picture may have captured their inaugural formation), and was tasked with defending Richmond. Nicely matted against black canvas and presented in a decorative wood frame.
