Description:

An exceedingly rare and visually compelling broadside engraving of the Dartmoor Massacre, in which imprisoned American sailors were tragically killed long after the formal conclusion of the War of 1812. The engraving, created by W. Carnes and engraved by G.G. Smith, Salem, MA, ca. 1815, measures approx. 11 x 10.5 in., plus title and margins on a 14 x 12 in. (sight) piece of wove paper, nicely presented in an early mahogany wood frame with gilded wood liner. Taken from a bird’s-eye perspective, the broadside depicts the prison in great detail as well as the events of the massacre itself, showing the prison’s walls and fences as well as showing over a hundred Rredcoats firing into a crowd of prisoners in the courtyard. According to Boston Rare Maps, “...many of the details are consistent with eyewitness accounts of the events...the positions of the soldiers, prisoners being shot as they attempted to flee into their barracks, even the hole in the wall that purportedly started it all...” The uniforms of the Americans and the British are hand-colored, with the smoke from the muskets being painted white. Some spots of mild foxing, small tears on top and bottom edge, else fine condition.
