Description:

(1824 - 1905) Confederate colonel who saw action as part of the 24th Louisiana in the Battle of Shiloh. He resigned from the regiment due to poor health only to be called back to serve as chief of heavy artillery at Port Hudson. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Head Quarters Crescent Regiment, April 1, 1862, to Brigadier General Daniel Ruggles giving a report on the camps of the Second Division. In part: '...The 4th and 13th La Regts., no sinks, wells, or ovens, the Regts. absent, the latter has two prisoners in charge of a Lieut. who has not been sufficient to keep watch over them. I recommend they be placed under proper guard. I find great deficiency in their ditching and drainage of the camps. Want of proper ventilation and drainage...I presume for want of a proper police force. I have no doubt but what the health of the division would be materially improved by ditching and cleaning in the camps, proper airing of the tents, the procuring of 'broom sage' to make beds...I call your particular attention to the beef served out to the men. Surgeons seem to think much of the diseases now prevailing is caused by it...The 20th[?] Regt. are well supplied and I must compliment the Colonel on the neat and tidy appearance of the whole camp...There will be a great scarcity of water, if immediate measures are not taken to supply the camps with wells...' Signed 'Marshall J. Smith Col. Crescent Regt. and Division officer of the day'. The letter has been inset to sturdier stock. Very good.
