Description:

(1896 - 1984) American general, commanded the landings at Salerno and Anzio against the forces of Kesselring. Great pair of signed items with a lesser-known history, includes: S.P., an official U.S. Army photograph showing Nazi general FRIDOLIN VON SENGER UND ETTERLIN stiffly saluting General Clark in surrender at war's end. Notably, Clark is unarmed, while von Senger has a pistol concealed at his back. Clark boldly signs the back of von Senger's uniform in black ink. The verso of the back bears an inkstamp from the Public Information Division, clearing it for publication as of Feb. 17, 1956. Fine. SOLD WITH: Signed clipping of an article written by Clark about the incident, titled 'The Nazi's Gun', notably reading in part: '...[von Senger] saluted and said he was reporting to implement unconditional surrender, which I accepted. Then, after I turned the matter over to my chief of staff, von Senger again saluted stiffly, turned on his heel and left. It was then that I noticed something oddly wrong -- he had come to surrender with a small pistol in a holster strapped to his belt at the back....'Get him back here,' I told an aide. When von Senger again appeared in the doorway, I said, 'You're not supposed to be armed. Get rid of that gun.' Precise and stiff, his face showing no emotion, von Senger took off the belt and let the holster swing downward. Deliberately, he swung it through the screen door against a tree outside and left...' The lower-right of the clipping shows the same image as the one signed above, and Clark signs in bold black ink next to the title.
