MARIA FEODOROVNA
(1759-1828) Russian Empress, wife of Paul I (1754-1801), she tried to briefly rule after his assassination; also the mother of Tsars Alexander I and Nicholas I. A.L.S. "Marie", 2pp. 8vo., Dec. 22, 1791, in French to Gen. Count Alexander von Benckendorff whose mother, Maria's lady-in-waiting, followed her to Russia from Wurttemberg. Marie declares her great friendship for the Count and his family. She regrets that he has been ill and reports that Gen. Lattinof has informed her that Gen. Kakoski took possession of some land, so she supposes that he (Benckendorff) is on his way and that nothing will prevent his departure. Small seal tear, very good condition.
