Description:

Great lot of six military maps of Germany owned and likely field-used by U.S. Army Maj. Gen. HAROLD W. BLAKELEY (1893 - 1966), commander of the 4th Infantry Division Artillery at the time of Operation Overlord and the Battle of the Bulge. Includes: British War Office map of the Darmstadt region of Germany, 31.5 x 25 in., First Edition, issued 1943, with the designation 'Sheet L.50' at top-right corner. WITH: American War Office map of the Augsburg region of Germany, 35 x 25 in., First Edition, issued 1943, with the designation 'Sheet W-5' at top-right corner. Docketed in pencil on the verso. WITH: American Map Service map of the Leipzig-Pilsen region of Germany, 25.25 x 31.25 in., First Edition, issued 1944, with designation 'Sheet 5' at top-right corner. WITH: British War Office map of the Stuttgart region of Germany, 32 x 24.5 in., First Edition, issued 1943, with designation 'Sheet L49' at top-right corner. WITH: British War Office map of the Innsbruck region of Germany, 28 x 23 in., First Edition, with designation 'Sheet M.48' at top-right. WITH: American Map Service map of the Karlsruhe region of Germany, 36 x 26 in., First Edition, with designation 'Sheet V-3' at top-right. Trimmed at right, adhesive residue at upper and lower borders, clearly removed from a headquarters map. Clearly worn and likely field-used, with irregular folds and some adhesive staining, suggesting some were removed from larger headquarters maps. These maps were retained by Blakeley's aide-de-camp, Capt. Roswell F. MacGillivray, the stepfather of our consignor. Adding additional provenance is photocopies of a number of documents related to MacGillivray's service under Maj. Gen. Blakeley, including: a partial list of the general staff of the 4th Infantry Division Artillery, May 15, 1945, listing Blakeley as the division commander with MacGillivray listed beneath as his aide-de-camp; a 1955 personal postwar letter from Blakeley to MacGillivray; a June 24, 1945 travel pass issued to MacGillivray by order of Blakeley; an extracted appendix to an after-action report, Jan. 7, 1945, reporting that Blakeley and MacGillivray, with their command group, entered Paris on Aug. 25, 1944 and were present at the surrender of the German garrison; MacGillivray's post-dated promotion certificate to the rank of captain; and a travel plan, Aug. 23, 1945, indicating that Blakeley and MacGillivray are to travel to a reception in Washington.
