Description:

M1889 WKC INFANTRY OFFICERS SWORD
Beautiful German-made Infantry Officers sword, 34 in. blade and 39.5 in. overall, with a shark skin grip triple-wire wrapped with gilt wire. The pommel and basket guard are of brass construction, gilt-plated though minimal remnants remain. Decorated with a floral design on the front of the pommel and intricate work on the guard depicting the Saxony coat of arms. Maker marked on the ricasso with a Knight's head indicating manufacture by WKC post WWI. Due to this blade bearing the coat of arms of Saxony it is also possible it was made prior to the 1880s (when WKC was formed and had the knight head and kings head emblem). Below the maker mark is a light engraving appearing to bear the owner's name 'Matthias Muller'[?] and the name of the German city Leipzig. The fullered blade bears a few small knicks and has clearly darkened with age. Despite the clear wear over time and from use this blade was clearly well-made and still retains a rather sharp tip. The wire wrapping of the sharkskin grip is a bit loose but remains intact. A rather attractive patina displayed throughout the pommel and guard. Adorned with a gilt portepee, indicating possible manufacture for a general. Housed within a blued steel scabbard with a single suspension ring, bearing a few dents.
